Professor receives lifetime achievement award

UCL Institute of Education (IOE) academic Professor Sue Hallam has won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Music and Drama Education Awards 2020.

The Music and Drama Education awards celebrate the extraordinary contribution made by professionals, companies, charities, schools and other organisations to the lives of others through the medium of music and drama.

The Lifetime Award was presented by Deborah Annetts, CEO the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

Now Honorary Emeritus Professor at the IOE, Sue Hallam pursued careers as a professional musician and a music educator. Professor Hallam has written numerous books on school attendance, ability grouping, music education and music psychology.

She has undertaken research relating to pedagogy in secondary and higher education, homework, learning in music and the effects of music on behaviour and studying.

Professor Hallam was awarded an MBE in the 2015 New Year Honours List.

Professor Hallam said: “It was a great honour to receive this reward. In a way it was a tribute to the hard work of all those involved in teaching music across the UK at a time when music has not always been valued in schools.”
