Share your memories of the IOE

25 January 2018

Do you have vivid memories of studying at the IOE? Would you be happy to explore some of those memories with us? If yes, you may be able to help us fill an important gap in our collection.

Mr Dicker's music class

The Friends of the Newsam Library and Archives have funded a project to gather oral histories from IOE alumni.  The idea for this project stems from the donation of the papers of the IOE Students' Union to the archives in 2013. The records donated, and others that the archives held previously, provide a patchy picture of the activities of the Union, but there is a lack of the voice of the student across the whole of the Institute's archive. When the IOE became a school of UCL in 2014, the Students' Union ceased to exist, therefore it seemed an appropriate time to gather records that give a picture of what being a student at the IOE as an autonomous body was like.

We are looking for people who studied at the IOE full or part time for a teaching qualification, Bachelor's or Master's degree, or PhD, pre-2015.

Perhaps you know someone who fits this criteria even if you don't?

If you are eligible, and might be interested in being interviewed or taking part in recorded group discussion, please email Jessica Womack (j.womack@ucl.ac.uk) with a short description of yourself, what and when you studied at the IOE. Your interview, or conversation, will be recorded and preserved in our archive stores, a transcription will be made available online.

Become a Friend of Newsam Library

This project is funded by the Friends of the Newsam Library and Archives. The Friends support the Newsam Library and Archives' unique resource for research in education, and especially its role in preserving the UK's educational heritage by acting as a national centre for archives and special collections. Its programme of events takes the archives and special collections as a starting point to open up discussion on key questions of educational history, and to emphasise links between seemingly disparate collections.

Many IOE alumni remember the library fondly. Joining the Friends of the Newsam Library and Archives is a chance for you to support us in caring for the collections that make us unique.

The Friends organisation has now been in existence for 15 years. During this time membership subscriptions have allowed us to;

  • Rebind the library's older government publications
  • Run social and promotional activities related to the collections, including exhibitions, conferences, and lectures
  • Secure funding to catalogue and make accessible our largest deposited archive collection - the records of the National Union of Women Teachers
  • Part-fund two Collection Assistant posts. These roles have now become permanent and are funded by UCL. Without the subscriptions of the Friends we would not have been able to prove the value of these roles

By becoming a Friend you will become part of a network of supporters who contribute to the future development of our collections. To become a member costs just £25 per year, or a one off donation of £300 for a life membership. For more information, and to register interest to join go to http://libguides.ioe.ac.uk/newsamfriends.
