IOE Centre raises awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

27 September 2017

The Centre for Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN:R&P) organised a stall for Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day on Friday 22 September.

The stall gave IOE staff, students and trainee teachers information about this hidden condition that affects an average of two children in every classroom.

DLD refers to children whose difficulties in speaking and understanding have a significant impact on learning and everyday life. This term comes under the umbrella of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), more familiar to teachers.

Despite the significant impacts on learning and literacy of DLD, work at the IOE has demonstrated that it raises many challenges for teachers in terms of identification and support.

The Centre would like to thank the Centre for Inclusive Education (CIE), the Communication Trust and Afasic for populating the stall with useful resources for language support in class.
