CLEAPSS Health and Safety for Science Technicians
This one-day course will help secondary science technicians to be aware of safety issues and the current health and safety legislation.
This course will help you become more comfortable with your responsibilities and enable you to use and explore the range of services and advice that you can access from the Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services (CLEAPSS). You'll also assess the use of risk assessments and learn what safe management means.
Who this course is for
This course is aimed at secondary-school science technicians.
Course objectives
- Raise awareness of safety issues and current Health & Safety legislation;
- To increase your confidence about your responsibilities;
- To help you become more aware of the full range of CLEAPSS services and advice;
- To consider and practise risk assessments for technician activities;
- To explore what “managing safely” means in practice for technicians.
Teaching and structure
This course is delivered as part discussion and part practical workshop.
Participants must bring a laptop, iPad or computer tablet to this course. It must be able to connect to the internet and access the CLEAPSS website.
During the course, the following will be covered:
- Sharing common Health & Safety concerns and identifying possible solutions;
- Health and safety legislation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and its subsequent regulations;
- Legal bans, myths and rumours;
- Risk assessment in general, and personal risk assessment for technician activities;
- Searching the CLEAPSS website to find health & safety information relevant to technician activities.
Certificates
You'll get a certificate of attendance on completing the course.

Price per participant is £180 and it includes course materials and packed lunch.
