Developing the role of the Senior Science Technician

As an experienced technician, in charge or aspiring to run your department's technical service, this course will enable you develop skills for sharing good practice, leadership and management, and to identify and address any changes needed to improve. Ensure you are up to date with key practices including health and safety and requisition systems. You will be able to deliver and enhance the technical service, in your school and possibly beyond, through training others and setting up local groups.

Course overview

This is a one-day course for school or college science technicians in charge of (or aspiring to manage) a team, or those who are sole technicians.

It will help you develop the skills needed to:

  • Share good practice
  • Develop you leadership and management capabilities 
  • Work cohesively as a team of technicians and also within the science department
  • Identify and address any changes needed to improve the technical service.

It will enable you to deliver and enhance the technical service in your school or college and possibly beyond, by training others, ensuring continuing professional development and setting up or contacting local groups.

Course content

The course covers the following:

  • Managing and organising the technical service, including the requisition system, health and safety and associated practical resources
  • Communication and working with others
  • Training others - induction programmes and appraisals
  • Leadership and management
  • Keeping up to date with developments in the field

Entry requirements

You'll need to be working as a science technician in a school or college.

Learning outcomes

This course will help you to:

  • Enhance your leadership skills, communication and manage team working;
  • Develop skills to share good practice;
  • Address key issues that are essential for effective performance in your role;
  • Evaluate situations and identify any necessary changes to improve practice;
  • Consider strategies for providing effective technical support including prioritising and scheduling work loads;
  • Develop and enhance the technical service delivered in your workplace focussing on the requisition system, health and safety and associated practical resources.

Course structure

The course is delivered mainly as a lecture with interactive discussion.
