8 January 2024

The IAS has a one-off fund to foster research, public engagement and/or innovative pedagogy in any field of critical area studies (CAS). Applications have now closed.

World map flipped

We are especially keen to support work that involves making connections across continents, and/or that builds collaborations between academics and artists. Research centres/hubs are encouraged to work together on joint applications. Topics that explore the intersections/tensions between critical area studies and global studies or local studies are also encouraged.

We expect to offer grants in the range of £500-£1500, for work to take place in the period from March to July 2024. The funds can be spent on items such as travel and accommodation, event catering, payment to a PhD student to facilitate the activity, or payments to artists (subject to UCL’s employment rules). Honoraria to academics will not be covered. Any events planned as part of your work should normally be held at the IAS (if you wish to hold them elsewhere, please make the case for doing so).

Administrative support for financial processing must be available from your home department(s).  CAS Small Grant Funds are paid to the individual’s host department upon project completion. As you incur costs and make claims to your department, please keep copies of all receipts as these will be required as part of your final expenditure report to the IAS.

Closing date: midnight on Sunday 18 February 2024.
