Dr Collins Edigin

Dr Collins Edigin is a Lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Benin in Benin City, Nigeria. His area of research is Political Economy, where he has demonstrated the impact of social and tax policies on political development and social structures in Colonial Benin. He is a member of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, United Kingdom. 

Project Description

Politics of Tax Bargaining and Negotiation in Colonial Benin, 1897-1960: The study investigates the power politics between the colonial state and the society that shaped the tax policies of Benin. It analyses the role of the indigenous people in shaping the colonial tax policies of Benin between 1897 and 1960. The study is essentially concerned with the ways British colonial authorities and African leaders and communities negotiated with one another over taxation policies in colonial Nigeria.
