13 October 2020

The IAS is launching a new programme of dedicated events for UCL PhD students in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

These events are designed to help postgrads think about the intellectual questions in their research from a wide range of perspectives across multiple disciplines.  We’ll focus on ideas, concepts, genres and rhetorics, to sharpen and hone abilities in thinking, writing and debating. There will be variety of events throughout the year, including informal “Coffee Club” sessions, work-in-progress seminars, a series of discussions on inter-disciplinarity, workshops on concepts, writing workshops. We are keen to develop the programme in discussion with the students themselves, so that it becomes tailored to their own intellectual needs and interests. These events are intended to complement the Doctoral School Development Programme and the “practical research skills” sessions run by the research councils.

We start this term with two series:

A weekly online meeting for UCL postgrads, starting on 21 October 2020, 11am–12pm.

Students in the writing-up stage of their PhD are invited to present a draft chapter for informal discussion and reflection. The first session will be on 18 November 2020, 4pm–5pm
