The aim of the workshop is simply to exchange research interests and identify common threads, with a view to building further activities in this area at UCL. The workshops will explore historical layers and contemporary patterns of gender, race and class as ‘residues’ of colonisation, memorialised from generation to generation, shaped by cultural transmission and reified in structures of bureaucracy and control. Relevant research might relate to archival, empirical and/or cultural projects in relation to different colonial and postcolonial contexts, as well as the study of contemporary cultural and artistic forms that critically engage with ideas around colonial power and its continuities today.
