A workshop for early-career scholars, to talk about the differences between academic cultures in different countries, with a view to encouraging everyone to see the British version of academia as one among many, with its own peculiarities, values (sometimes articulated, sometimes not) and unspoken expectations. The event will open with a panel of short reflections from people who have spent some time at British universities after working in universities elsewhere. The workshop will look more broadly at the distinctive habitus of national university sectors. There can be great differences in, for example, how work is assessed, how discussion is conducted, how presentations are given, how colleagues interact with each other.
