Cosmography and Geography of Africa was written in 1526 by the exiled Moroccan diplomat Johannes Leo Africanus and offers a wide-ranging eyewitness description of the cities, people, landscape and history of North Africa. It remained the primary source of European knowledge on the subject until the nineteenth century. The new volume, published by Penguin Classics, is the first English translation since 1600, and the first translation into any language of the original Italian manuscript.
For the roundtable discussion, the editors and translators Dr Anthony Ossa-Richardson and Richard Oosterhoff will be joined by two distinguished scholars: Dr Natalya Din-Kariuki (University of Warwick), and Professor Joan Pau Rubiés (Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona). The discussion will be chaired by Dr Eric Langley (UCL).
The event will be followed by drinks and an opportunity to buy the book. It is organised in collaboration with the UCL Centre for Early Modern Exchanges
