There are many situations in which you need to write a compelling short statement on the scope and significance of your research (applying for jobs, fellowships, grants). It can be surprisingly hard to do, partly because you are so familiar with the material that it’s hard to identify what someone else does and doesn’t need to know about it. This workshop will help you to craft a powerful statement on your research to make it stand out from the pile.
It will be led by Nicola Baldwin, writer and director of theatre and film, and Nicola Miller, Director of the IAS and historian of Latin America. The two sessions are related: please come to the morning session with a draft statement about your research. There will then be a series of writing exercises to inspire ways to improve it. Between 12 and 2, over lunch, you will rewrite your statement, then during the afternoon session we will all give each other feedback. By the end of the day you will have written a powerful account of your main research project, ready to be tweaked for a variety of applications. The workshop will also help you to improve your skills in writing abstracts for conference papers.
