I am an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in archives and records management at University College London (UCL), and a member of the editorial boards of Tabula (Spain) and Arhivski Vjesnik / Bulletin d'Archives (Croatia).

At UCL, I taught archives and records management from 1995 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2014. Between 2002 and 2005 I was programme director for the MA/Diploma/Certificate in Archives and Records Management, and the MA/Diploma/Certificate in Records and Archives Management (International), in UCL's School of Library, Archive and Information Studies (now the Department of Information Studies).

I previously worked as an archivist for the Corporation of the City of London, for St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and for the Royal College of Physicians. I have also worked as a freelance archivist and records manager, and as a consultant to the International Records Management Trust, participating in records management and educational projects in The Gambia, Ghana, Botswana, and Uganda, and contributing educational materials for use in developing countries throughout the Commonwealth. In 2010 I was Visiting Professor in the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia.

I have published widely on archives and records management topics, including records' contextualisation, appraisal, description, and use; conceptual understandings of records, archives, information, and evidence; the performativity of records and their role in social actions; history of record-making and record-keeping ideas and practices; and the challenges and opportunities for making, keeping, and using records and archives in digital environments. I am a frequent speaker on these and related subjects at international academic and professional conferences. My published work won the Ernst Posner Award in 2009, the Hugh A. Taylor Prize in 2013, the Archival History Article Award of the Society of American Archivists in 2022-23, and the Bob Williams Research Paper Award in 2023.
