Firstly, ensure that you are running up-to-date anti-virus software. UCL has licenses for both staff and students for anti-virus software which can be downloaded from the Software Database on the following link:
Your anti-virus software should be able to catch and/or remove malware but some malware can be particularly difficult to detect and remove. In this case we recommend that you try the following:
Combofix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/combofix/
Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Note: Malwarebytes is not free for use in educational environments. You may therefore need to purchase a license.
Sophos Anti Rootkit: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-anti-rootkit.aspx
Tips on avoiding malware

- Do not open attachments that you are not expecting
- Ensure your anti-virus software is working and up-to-date
- Ensure your firewall is turned on
- Be careful browsing non-reputable websites
