Health Inequalities over the Life Course 

The aim of this module is to provide an overview of the fundamental theories and concepts used in life course epidemiology, present current evidence of the influence of factors over the life course on health inequalities and encourage the critical assessment of that evidence.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Describe and distinguish between the different models and concepts used in life course epidemiology
  • Understand the main UK data sets that are available to life course researchers
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of a life course approach to health inequalities
  • Debate and critically assess the role of factors influencing health across the life course, and how health inequalities are affected

MSc/PG Dip Global Health and Development students subject to availability as this is not an IGH module.

Admission Requirements

MSc and PG Dip students: Open to all UCL MSc/PG Dip Global Health and Development, and to any UCL MSc/PG Dip students.

Course length 3 weeks 
Course dates 23 April to 10 May 2019 
Days and times Monday, Tuesday and Friday (am and pm).

  • Life-course epidemiology - theories, concepts and models
  • Socio-biological interface over the life course
  • Early child development and health inequalities
  • Adolescent health
  • Gender divisions of labour, family & health 
  • Family change and health over the life course
  • A lifecourse approach of cognitive ageing  

Teaching and learning methods

Sessions will consist of a lecture and discussion or small group work. Moodle will be used to give students access to reading materials, lectures and other associated work.  Where reading materials are distributed in advance, students will be asked to read these prior to the session.

Assessment

Essay 100% (2,500 words) - deadline 2pm Friday 31 May 2019
