Kidney Development & Disease Research Group

Overview

Welcome to the home page of the Kidney Development & Disease research group at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.

Our mission is to understand the causes of kidney disease in children and adults. Currently, there are over 65,000 individuals in the UK with end-stage kidney disease, of which 1,000 are children. There is no cure for kidney disease and the ultimate aim of our work is to develop new therapies to treat kidney patients. To do this, we use a combination of experimental models and patient samples alongside state-of-the-art technologies including three-dimensional imaging, gene therapy and stem cell approaches.

Our group consists of a mix of basic scientists and clinicians working together and is led by several principal investigators (Dr David Long, Professor Paul Winyard, Dr Aoife Waters and Dr Rukshana Shroff). We have strong links with Great Ormond Street Hospital with several investigators holding clinical appointments. We also collaborate closely with the Department of Renal Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital.
