History staff take part in UCL Festival of Culture

27 April 2016

Festival of Culture

From 23-27 May UCL will host its annual Festival of Culture; a free five day celebration of research from the Faculties of Arts & Humanities and Social & Historical Sciences. This year a number of UCL History academics will be putting on events as part of the festival.

Events led by UCL History staff:

  • Dr Adam Smith will give a talk on 'The Battle for the US Constitution' on Tuesday 24 May 12:15-12:45. Adam will explore the Fourteenth Amendment and why a growing movement in the US seeks to have it repealed.
  • Dr John Sabapathy will be delivering a session on 'Accountability: From Chilcot to Domesday' on Tuesday 24 May 12:45-13:30. John will consider the strong medieval roots of modern accountability, and shows that the Middle Ages often had a clearer idea of the limits and possibilities of 'accountability' than we appear to today.
  • The Legacies of British Slave-ownership project team will lead a session on 'Britain's Forgotten Slave Owners' on Wednesday 25 May 12:15-13:15, in which they will give attendees an insight into the project and their two-part BBC documentary which was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award.
  • Join members of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project team for a walking tour of Bloomsbury. This short tour will highlight some of the addresses that we know were associated with slave-owners, and show how this heritage of slave-ownership has been eclipsed by a more comfortable and comforting history that has been overlaid on to that of slavery. The tour will take place on Wednesday 25 May 13:30-14:45.
