Description of course types

Full year

Worth one unit.

Thematic modules:

Normally taught by a weekly 2-hour seminar. Total contact hours 40. May be available as intercollegiate 'Group 2' courses - in which case teaching must take place on Thursday afternoons. 

Normally assessed by 3-hour exam (50%) and 2 essays (50%)

Survey modules:

Not available to finalists.

Normally taught by a combination of weekly one-hour lectures, and weekly one-hour classes with up to 15 students each. Total contact hours 40.

Normally assessed by 3-hour exam (75%) and 1 essay (25%) and a further non-assessed essay or equivalent written piece of work.

Affiliate module versions of the Thematic and Survey modules:

Suffix 'A' (HIST2XXXA and HIST6XXXA) for first term only

Suffix 'B' (HIST2XXXB and HIST6XXXB) for second term only

These versions will automatically be created for all full year modules. These are available to affiliate students as stand alone modules, for affiliate students attending for the Autumn term only or Spring/Summer term only.

Where this version of a full year module is not available to part-year affiliate students, this should be flagged with the Undergraduate Administrative team by the Module Convenor/Proposer.

Assessments as follow:

HIST2XXXA/HIST6XXXA 1 essay of 4,000 words (100%)

HIST2XXXB/HIST6XXXB essay 1, 2,500 words (40%) summative essay 2, 2,500 words (60% titles released by the administration team on day one of term 3)

(for B versions students should only be assessed on materials from term 2)

Half year Advanced Seminars

These modules are unavailable to first year students. They are not intercollegiate.

Worth half a unit.

Normally taught by 10 classes of 2 hours, with up to 15 students.

Normally assessed by two essays of 2,500 words (100%).

Half year non-History Affiliate Courses

Available to non-history affiliate students (i.e. those admitted to other departments, without a background in history). Worth half a unit/4 US credits.

Normally taught by 10 classes of 2 hours, with up to 15 students.

Assessed by  two essays of 2,500 words (100%)

Research Seminar

This is a half year module worth 0.5 units.

Taken by second year History students only.

Normally taught by 10 weekly classes of 2 hours, with up to 15 students each.

Focusing on the examination of a specific set of source materials and designed to develop students' capacity to work independently and to use primary and secondary sources in the construction of a historical argument.

Normally assessed by one 5,000 word essay.

Special Subject

This is a full year module worth two units.

Usually taken by final year students and usually intercollegiate (to become which they have to be sent to the Subject Panel in History).

They centre upon primary sources or 'set texts' of c. 1,000 pages or the equivalent.

Normally taught by 20 classes of 2 hours, with up to 15 students each. Classes normally take place on Monday afternoons. Two sessions should take the form of dissertation workshops.

Normally assessed by one 10,000 word dissertation (1 unit) and a three hour end-of-year exam (1 unit).

MA field of study

Normally taught by 20 2-hour classes, with up to 10 students.

Normally assessed by two essays - usually either two 4,000-word essays for a 30 credit module or two 5,000-word essays for a 40 credit module.

Can be made available in two halves, each to be assessed by one essay of 4,000 words (15 credit module)  or 5,000 words (20 credit module). 

MA modules will be weighted as 30/40 credits for a full module and 15/20 credits for a half module. 

There can be overlap with the content of undergraduate courses, but there may be only a limited amount of joint teaching of MA and undergraduate students and no common assessment.
