UCL partners with Telles Foundation to train future technology leaders

29 November 2022

The philanthropically funded Telles Scholars Programme will bring talented students from Brazil who face barriers to higher education to UCL’s top-ranking Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE).

The philanthropic partnership will enable an initial cohort of two students to undertake four years of study in London: one year on a Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) Foundation Year – one of the leading such programmes at any UK university – and three years on a BEng course.

Their time at UCL will be fully funded through a gift from Telles Foundation – an international charity that provides transformational opportunities to low-income people in Brazil by improving their access to education.

Comprehensive financial support will be combined with a holistic approach to skills development, pastoral care, and careers and mentoring frameworks to prepare the Telles Scholars for future success as part of the next generation of technology leaders.

On completing their studies, they will join a community of EEE graduates recognised as some of the most talented globally, entering careers in fields such as robotics, nano- and quantum- technology, software engineering, and financial services.

“At Telles, we believe that every young person deserves an opportunity to fulfil their potential,” said Luiza Toledo of Telles Foundation. “To make that happen, we work with experts in their field who share our commitment to this simple idea and the hugely significant and sustainable impact it can have.”

“We are delighted to announce UCL as the first UK partner of the Telles Scholars Programme and look forward to seeing two of Brazil’s brightest students take up their places in London to explore their interest in engineering and technology.”

“As educators, we strive to create opportunities for our students that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to,” said Professor Sarah Spurgeon, Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL. “This partnership between Telles Foundation and UCL allows us to provide such opportunities for under privileged students from Brazil.”

“Our colleagues within the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education will provide those students with the foundation they need to flourish in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and we will support those students to achieve their full potential through a world-class engineering education.”

“Scholarships are critical to enabling those who have the talent, but not the resources, to come to UCL,” said Kirsten Buckley, Director of Development at UCL’s Office of the Vice-President (Advancement). “The effect of Telles Foundation’s support will be transformational for students and their families, and also for UCL and the world it seeks to impact.”

Applications for the Telles Scholars Programme are due to open in early 2023 and will be assessed based on both financial need and academic potential, with scholarships beginning in the 2023/24 academic year.
