Climate change and sustainability

The climate emergency is one of the most complex and insidious threats humanity faces, affecting every aspect of our lives. We are faced with a mighty challenge: to profoundly reshape our relationship with the planet and its resources, and make a safer, healthier, more prosperous world. Meeting a problem of this scale and complexity requires powerful research communities like UCL to lead the push for change.

Securing a healthier, fairer, more sustainable future for all

As a community of staff, students and partners, UCL is using its breadth of talent and expertise to address the climate challenge on multiple fronts, ranging from what we can achieve today, to pioneering future system change, and putting sustainability at the heart of our campus.

“Climate change is the existential crisis of our time, and a massive shift in the way our civilisation works is now a huge but necessary task. To navigate the next few decades our society will require publicly available knowledge provided by careful and robust studies. UCL has a huge range of multidisciplinary expertise and the right structure to address this challenge. We are stepping up to provide the tools, ideas and evaluation that our society is going to need.” Dr Helen Czerski, Associate Professor, UCL Mechanical Engineering

Addressing the challenge on multiple fronts

Climate science research

We're improving our understanding of how our climate is changing at both planetary and local
scales.

Adaptation and mitigation

How and where we live as we adapt to future climates is a major global challenge – we're providing the solutions.

Changing opinion and policy

We're ensuring knowledge is shared to drive constructive public dialogue and build the consensus for action across communities.
