Climate change and sustainability

The climate emergency is one of the most complex and insidious threats humanity faces, affecting every aspect of our lives. We are faced with a mighty challenge: to profoundly reshape our relationship with the planet and its resources, and make a safer, healthier, more prosperous world. Meeting a problem of this scale and complexity requires powerful research communities like UCL to lead the push for change.

Securing a healthier, fairer, more sustainable future for all

As a community of staff, students and partners, UCL is using its breadth of talent and expertise to address the climate challenge on multiple fronts, ranging from what we can achieve today, to pioneering future system change, and putting sustainability at the heart of our campus.

“What needs to emerge post-COVID, is a determination on the part of government, business and everyone else that the economic recovery that will follow will build inexorably towards a zero-carbon world rather than away from it.” - Professor Paul Ekins OBE, Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy and Director of UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources

Addressing the challenge on multiple fronts

Climate science research

We're improving our understanding of how our climate is changing at both planetary and local
scales.

Adaptation and mitigation

How and where we live as we adapt to future climates is a major global challenge – we're providing the solutions.

Changing opinion and policy

We're ensuring knowledge is shared to drive constructive public dialogue and build the consensus for action across communities.
