Guest lecture from Camden Clean Air Initiative

2 February 2023

The CCAI can support any student interested in using their air monitoring system for their dissertation research.

Camden Lock at Camden Market

Earlier this week, Georgina McGivern from the Camden Clean Air Initiative (CCAI) gave a lecture to our first-year geographers taking the Geography in the Field 2 module.

Her lecture focused on the problems of poor air quality in London generally, and Camden specifically.

She showed the class Airscape, the air-quality monitoring network used by the Borough to keep a close watch on the pollutant levels of the North London district.

It represents perhaps the densest air-quality monitoring anywhere in the world, providing real-time information on air quality.

Georgina has very kindly offered her support to any student interested in making use of Camden air quality data or other information from CCAI.

In particular, this may be of interest to students considering their dissertation topics at the moment.

Professor Jonathan Holmes said, "We welcome having practitioners come and lecture to our first-year students on this module.

"Camden Borough is at the forefront of air-quality monitoring and this was an excellent opportunity to hear about this programme and about other community projects led by CCAI."

Georgina said, "It was wonderful to be able to speak to students studying the important topic of air quality and provide them with real-life case studies and data that will hopefully support them on their course.

"Thank you to UCL for the opportunity and hopefully we can continue to interact with students and the university on all things environmental."

If you're interested in finding our more about CCAI or using Airscape data, please contact the module co-convenor, Jonathan Holmes.
