31 October 2022

Emeritus Professor Anson Mackay has won not once but twice at the UCL Inclusion Awards 2022.

Anson, who recently gave the Rick Battarbee Lecture 2022 on his work at Lake Baikal, received the Sir Stephen Wall Award for Inspiring Role Model at the ceremony last Wednesday.

The award recognises Anson's engagement with members of the UCL community, speaking openly about his personal experiences and helping to champion diversity and inclusion amongst our students and staff.

At the end of the night, he was also awarded the UCL Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Award for Inspirational Engagement.

The Inclusion Awards are a recognition of the contribution members of the UCL community have made to progressing equality, diversity, and inclusion at the University.

“I was quite stunned at being given two awards at this year’s Inclusion Award ceremony.

“The Sir Stephen Wall Award for Inspiring Role Model was very humbling as the other contenders were outstanding. And to win an award for Inspirational Engagement was a wonderful way to be recognised for the EDI work that I’d done in the years before my retirement.

“I am lucky to have had the privilege to work with so many brilliant academic and professional services staff across UCL, who work tirelessly to improve our institution as a place of work and study for all.”

Taking place annually, they are open to all members of staff, teams, and departments.

Anson has a long-established history with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at UCL, including establishing the Department’s LGBTQ+ network Out In Geography and serving as Vice-Dean of EDI for the UCL Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences from 2019 up until his retirement in this year.

He also served as co-chair of UCL’s Gender Equality Steering Group and was a member of UCL’s LGBTQ+ Equality Steering Group, again until his retirement earlier this year.
