Third year geographers explore challenges to UK sovereignty

Brexit and Gibraltar

Between 26 March and 1 April, the third-year UCL Geographers on the Political Geography and Geopolitics course visited Gibraltar with Professor Jason Dittmer and PhD researcher Sarah Kunz.

The trip focused on the current issues facing this British Overseas Territory, including handling Brexit and the ongoing claims of Spain to sovereignty over the rocky peninsula.

The party received a tour of the border from aviation officials and immigration officers, followed by a briefing on Brexit from the Territory’s Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia.

Between additional visits to the University of Gibraltar and HM Dockyard, the group also hiked up the Rock (or took the cable car) and looked for dolphins in the Straits of Gibraltar.

All in all, not a bad place to study borders, diplomacy, and political geology.
