UCL Geography’s postgraduate teaching under COVID-19

21 July 2021

Positive responses to a difficult year

UCL Geographers win more national dissertation prizes

Every year, the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES), organised by Advance HE, asks students who have taken Masters and other taught postgraduate courses about their quality. This gives students a chance to provide open and honest feedback on courses and departments as well as their motivations for taking programmes and experiences of dissertation and project preparation.

This year the especially challenging context of studying during 2020-2021 was charted by 130 UCL Geography MSc students who took the courses - over half the total.

They were particularly positive in relation to:

  • Overall satisfaction with the quality of the course
  • Quality of teaching and enthusiasm of teaching staff
  • Dissertation support and supervision
  • Development of research skills
  • Clarity of assessment criteria

Some regular features of the courses inevitably suffered, including direct access to campus facilities and resources, but IT and online library access remained good.

The 2020-21 year has posed unprecedented difficulties for students, but key aspects of the postgraduate experience in UCL Geography remained positive, reflecting the enormous efforts put in by staff to deliver our MSc programmes successfully.
