New insights into microplastics pollution

In September 2019, Teki Anna Tetteh-Wright, who graduated with a First Class BSc in Geography at UCL, was awarded First Prize in the 2019 ECOS Student Article Competition. See Teki’s dissertation study wins First Prize.

The article, based on Teki’s undergraduate dissertation and published by the British Association of Nature Conservationists, showed that, although Eurasian Otters had expanded their presence in the UK over the past 40 years, in her Essex field area their diets show a high and potentially harmful presence of microplastics. This seemed likely to have been ingested mainly through the predation of already contaminated prey.

On 17^th June this year, Teki went on to receive a further trophy for her research as runner-up in the 'Change Maker’ category of the Plastic Free Awards. These were founded by Surfers Against Sewage and the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation to recognize researchers who have produced new insights into plastic pollution. The judges included BBC Wildlife presenter and biologist, Guillian Burke and writer and journalist Lucy Siegle.

In August 2020 Teki completed an MSc in Climate Change, Management and Finance at Imperial College Business School. She then worked for Trove Research, a sustainability consultancy, before being offered a 2021 summer internship on the Morgan Stanley Sustainable Finance Summer Programme – Equity Research.

She’s keeping her options open for the future.
