Pursuing Gissing from London to Exeter

Continuing his enthusiasm for the Victorian writer, George Gissing, and for literary geographies of cities, Professor Richard Dennis has published a series of essays in The Gissing Journal, setting the author and his writing in their spatial context.

For a more direct Gissing experience, aficionados of Ramble London might be interested in ‘Gissing and Chelsea: An Urban Walk’ (2018), available from Richard. There is also a more remote and exhaustive urban encounter with the author, ‘Gissing and Exeter’, published in three successive issues of The Gissing Journal through 2019-2020.

Richard has also co-edited and contributed to The Materiality of Literary Narratives in Urban History (Routledge, 2020). In November 2019 he marked the launch of this book with a guest lecture, ‘No Home-Like Place: Delusions of Home in Victorian and Edwardian Novels’, at Åbo Akademi University, Turku, Finland, where his co-editors are based.

Richard also continues his longstanding (non-literary) interests in the geographies of housing in Toronto and public transport in 19^th-century London.
