Meeting new friends and exploring London

UCLGeogging for charity

On 31st May, 15 UCLGeoggers (including Geogging alumni and friends of Geoggers) ran either half-marathons or 10kms around Richmond Park.

(In fact, the distances were rather longer at 24km and 12km respectively, making them the longest distances that most of the participants had ever run!)

The event was held to raise money for the charity Shelter, and the team exceeded their target of raising £1000.

The group had been training for 10 weeks before the event, especially through the weekly UCLGeoggers Monday evening run around Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill. On the day, the camaraderie was amazing, including a picnic afterwards with ice cream, strawberries and cold beer!

Panny Zaris (MSc Climate Change) who organised most of the event said

“UCL Geoggers is the perfect group to be a part of if you want to keep fit in a fun way, meet some amazing people and explore the beautiful parks of central London. Before starting my Masters at UCL, I never used to run more than 15 minutes on a gym treadmill. I was also very nervous about moving to a new city where I didn't know my way around or many people. UCL Geoggers is a welcoming family where everyone supports each other to achieve their own goals with no pressure - and with all their help, 8 months later I managed to complete a Half-Marathon! I have met some amazing people, explored some hidden gems of London and I will definitely keep in touch as an alumni Geogger in the future.”

UCL Volunteering ensured the event ran safely and smoothly, with guidance for completing official risk assessments and ensuring we had first aid representatives during the event. They also shared our event in their Newsletter. If people want to get involved in any fundraising or volunteering campaigns, contact UCL Volunteering.

People have been very generous with their donations, and the link is still available if anyone wants to contribute.

Finally, if anyone wants to get involved in running with the group, we welcome members of all abilities. Follow us on Facebook.
