Launch of Geo+Data London

8 October 2018

Sharing experience of using Big Data

Launch of Geo+Data London

The first Geo+Data London event took place in UCL Geography on 2nd October. Hosted by the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC), in partnership with the Association for Geographic Information (AGI), the seminar series will bring together academic researchers and industry to share and learn from experience in the use of Big Data.

The first meeting featured Alistair McMahon, Analytics Director at Telefónica UK/O2, and Balamurgan Soundararaj, a UCL Geography doctoral student.

Alistair McMahon’s talk, Smart Cities and Smart Transportation focussed on the connectivity work being undertaken by O2, arguing that a data-led approach to plan was critical to the success of smart cities.

Bala Soundararaj gave an illuminating talk on the challenges encountered during his research, Estimating real-time high street footfall from Wi-Fi probe requests, and explaining the novel problem-solving methods he needed to deploy.

The next Geo+Data London seminar will be held on 4 December 2018, and will feature James Ketteley from Mastercard and Justin van Dijk from UCL. Registration will open in the coming weeks.
