The Department's oldest successful PhD candidate?

Many congratulations to Clifford German (84), who has just been awarded his PhD on 'Migration, work and housing in Northampton, 1841-71'.

Clifford's research has involved intensive work on nineteenth-century censuses and rate books and includes an impressive atlas of the social geography of mid-Victorian Northampton and the surrounding county.

Clifford was supervised by Professor Richard Dennis with support from Hugh Clout. His examiners were Jon Stobart (Professor of History at Manchester Metropolitan) and Dr James Kneale of UCL Geography.
