10 years of Mapping for Change

November 24th marked 10 years since Louise Francs, Chris Church and Muki Haklay set up Mapping for Change.

Originally based on a research project at UCL, this is now well established as a social enterprise, with its work cited in the annual report of the Chief Medical Officer (.pdf) and the Guardian. Projects have also been developed in many places far from their London origins, including Barcelona, Katowice, Valletta, and Kampala.

Mapping for Change came out of Mapping Change for Sustainable Communities (.pdf) supported by the Higher Education Innovation Fund. Dr Claire Ellul (Now Lecturer in GIS, UCL Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering) developed the first version of the community mapping platform during and after her postdoctoral research.

When the “Mapping Change…” project was about to end in December 2008, it was decided to continue utilising the platform and engaging its methodologies through a new organisation: Mapping for Change.
