Mapping Fear of Crime

Using spatio-temporal data on perceptions of safety in the built environment (London) to identify characteristics and correlates of fear of crime as experienced during everyday journeys

This project builds on current trends in Fear of Crime (FOC) research moving towards more accurate reflections of everyday experiences of FOC and perceptions of safety in the environment. It aims to collect information about people’s perceptions of safety during daily commutes by using mobile phone applications to log GPS coordinates, and collect qualitative data about these recorded locations.

This data may further be supplemented by quantitative coding of built environment attributes and sensor data (e.g, from a mobile Galvanic Skin Response armband). Outcomes from this project  can be a more holistic understanding of FOC, its relationship with the built environment, and the potential applications of this methodology to other social sciences problems.
