Migrant crises, past and present

The gravity of the current migrant crisis has incited an overwhelming debate about freedom of movement and the boundaries of national identity. The extensive coverage of these discussions is constantly at our fingertips, often leading us to think that this phenomenon is unprecedented. The research of Alexander Samson, Reader in Early Modern Studies at UCL, argues otherwise.

We are organising a ‘flash’ seminar, an opportunity for students, professors, and curious minds alike, to listen to Dr Samson speak about the lessons we can learn from past migrant crises, followed by an open debate. We believe that this free event will allow all participants to further inform themselves about the fundamental questions surrounding possibly the largest conflict of our time.

The event is being organised by Know it Wall, a project which aims to popularise academic research through its publication in bitesize articles, podcasts and video-documentaries. We have made a podcast of Dr Samson’s research, which you can listen to.
