PhD Studentship: Massive Space Division Multiplexing for Optical Fibre Communication Systems

Applications will remain open until a suitable candidate is found, but if you are interested please apply as soon as possible. Click on the button below for more information.

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship to work as part of the £1.9M UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship 'Beyond Exabit Optical Communications – from new devices, via new dimensions to new systems' (2020-2024). This is a UCL-led research programme with leading industrial and academic partners: OFS Optics, Fraunhofer HHI, University L’Aquila, and Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. This position is based at UCL, to work with the Optical Networks Group, under the supervision of Dr Filipe Ferreira.

PhD Studentship: High-Capacity Optical Fibre Networks

A fully funded four-year PhD studentship is available to UK / EU students to work in the Optical Networks Group (within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at UCL) on the next generation of optical communication infrastructure and technologies to underpin the cloud connectivity. The project is experimental oriented research and the successful student will help us to develop our recirculating optical fibre loop and a mesh network test-bed to support transmission rates above Terabit/s speeds, expanding the usable optical fibre bandwidth using new amplifier and transmitter technologies. The student will work closely with researchers on the EPSRC TRANSNET Programme grant.

Applications will remain open until a suitable candidate is found, but if you are interested please apply as soon as possible. Click on the button below for more information.

PhD studentship: High-Capacity Optical Fibre Networks

PhD and postdoctoral levels

We have a number of positions both at PhD and postdoctoral levels, to start as soon as possible.

A number of fully-funded industrial PhD studentships are available for EU nationals from leading industrial collaborators inc Microsoft, ADVA, Mitsubishi, Alcatel Submarine Networks, KDDI and others. PhD applicants must have excellent academic record with a 1st class (or equivalent) degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering or Physics or a related discipline and demonstrate enthusiasm and ability for research work.

We are looking to recruit PhD students and postdoctoral research fellows with aptitude and interest in hands-on experimental work in the areas of high speed optical fibre transmission systems, digital signal processing and machine learning for optical communications.

On the experimental research – we are looking for PhD students to help us develop our recirculating optical fibre loop test-bed to support transmission rates above Terabit/s speeds, expand the usable optical fibre bandwidth and investigate digital transceivers to enable network intelligence using DSP and machine learning.
