Research summary

My research focuses on computer communications and internetworking. My interests are in the areas of Internet routing and congestion control, Information-Centric Networks, Software-Defined Networks, Mobile Crowdsourcing and Mobile, Opportunistic and Delay-/Disruption-Tolerant Networks. In particular, I am interested in resource allocation and management of both existing and future Internet architectures.

I have been involved in the ICN Research Group (ICNRG) of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), the research arm of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the main Internet standards-setting committee, from its very first days. I have co-authored one of the first Internet-Drafts produced by the group on the "ICN Research Challenges", which has now become RFC 7927.

I have published extensively in top IEEE and ACM conferences and journals with Impact Factors (IF) constantly higher than 1.5 and Acceptance Rates (AR) lower than 25%. Such publications include the IEEE Communications Magazine (IF: 4.007), IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (IF: 3.4), IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (IF: 2.07), Elsevier Computer Networks (IF: 1.7), Elsevier Computer Communications (IF: 1.69), IEEE Infocom (AR: ~18.5%), IFIP Networking (AR: ~20%), ACM HotNets (AR: ~20%), ACM ICN (AR: ~22%). Our team has received four best paper awards, at IFIP Networking 2012 and 2015, at IEEE LANMAN 2016 and ACM MobiArch 2016.

Teaching summary

I teach Quality of Service at the "Introduction to IP Networks" module of the MSc Communications Programme.

Dr Ioannis Psaras is an EPSRC Fellow (2015-2020) and Lecturer (since Sept. 2016) at the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of UCL. He is interested in resource management techniques for current and future networking architectures with particular focus on routing, caching and congestion control. Recently, he has been heavily involved in the effort to shift the Internet towards an Information-Centric Networking environment. Before joining UCL in 2010, he held positions at the University of Surrey, and Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, where he also obtained his PhD in 2008.

Dr Psaras has extensive experience in leading cutting-edge research and managing the development and implementation of proof-of-concept prototypes. Current active projects include:

  • EPSRC Early Career Fellowship: In-Network Service Providers (2015-2020 - http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/M003787/1)
  • H2020 ICN2020, joint project between EU and Japan (2016-2019 - http://www.icn2020.org/)
  • H2020 UMOBILE Project (2015-2018 - http://www.umobile-project.eu/)
  • EPSRC COMIT Project (2014-2017 - http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/comit-project/)
Past/completed projects include:

  • EU FP7 GreenICN, joint project between EU and Japan (2013-2016 - http://www.greenicn.org/)
  • EU FP7 COMET (2010-2013 - http://www.comet-project.org/)
