Translations are supposed to choose between rendering word-by-word or for the sense, ad verbum or ad sensum. But what if literary imitation could move along another axis - what if a poem could be written to sound like the original? A set of English translations and musical settings of Italian verse in the sixteenth century seem to work just like this.
