What Does Participation Involve?

Outline of the Study: The study is made up of 3 visits which will take place on 3 separate days. There will be a one week break between visit 1 and visit 2 and a two week break between visit 2 and visit 3. After all visits have been completed, participants are asked to complete a questionnaire about their experience of having a 3T and 7T scans. The questionnaire can be returned to the research team by post.

Visits

Visit 1: For the first visit our participants will come to the Dementia Research Centre Queen Square in London. This visit will invovle the following:

  • One medical assessment and interview with a doctor who will ask questions about how our participants have been feeling, and symptoms they may have had. This will last up to 50 minutes.
  • One neuropsychological assessment session to evaluate memory, thinking and vision lasting between 60 minutes and 90 minutes.
  • An impression of the participant's upper teeth will be made by specialists from the Eastman Dental Institute and used to prepare a custom-made mouth-guard. This will be done at the Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging (next door to the Dementia Research Centre). The guard will be used during the scanning sessions, allowing us to track the participant's eye and head movements during the scan. See more about the mouth-guard on the page called "What is a Mouth-Guard and Why Are We Using it?". This will last up to 20 minutes.
