A celebration of British artist and former Slade Professor Edward Allington (1951-2017), the exhibition In pursuit of sculpture is extended to feature another key strand in the artist’s prolific career.
Allington’s preoccupation with kitsch comes to the fore in this exhibition with Snail from the Necropolis of Hope (1983), one of his exuberant ‘cornucopia’ sculptures. Fascinated by the classical world and its hold on contemporary imagination, the artist contemplated timely questions about authenticity, origins and truth. Sculptures, photographs, drawings, antique ledgers, motorbike parts, toy dinosaurs, plastic grasshoppers and other ‘creepy-crawlies’ come together with historical collections in a traditional Print Room in the heart of UCL’s neoclassical Wilkins Building. Together they capture the unique contribution of this most erudite of sculptors, who had a great sense of humour and inspired generations of artists at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art and beyond.
