The Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology invites you to join artist and educator Clare Sams for a workshop on basket weaving, inspired by the collection.

Basket weaving is a craft that has truly stood the test of time. You can find several examples of it in the collection separated by thousands of years, and this craft can even be traced back to before the use of pottery. Basket weaving comes in many patterns using a variety of techniques and is made of tightly wrapped fibres such a palm leaves or halfa grasses. In this session we will be using paper and thin card to learn a few of the techniques used in this period. Come and try out some weaving and take your own basketry example home!

Read more about UCL research into weaving on the Researchers in Museums blog.

This workshop is part of UCL Museums & Cultural Programmes 2023-24 event series Architecting Futures from Past Traces, bringing together art, culture and research.
