The Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology invites you to join science-based artist Dr. Lizzie Burns for a family workshop. Learn the Japanese craft of origami and make a crane, a symbol for good fortune and longevity, for a loved one or even to decorate your tree this holiday period.

Why origami at a museum for Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology?

This year the Petrie Museum has been reflecting on its past; 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of moving into the Museum's current building, and is also what would have been Flinders Petrie's 170th birthday. As part of these reflections, the Museum is not only looking at the collection but also the stories and relationships that have contributed to its present. One of these stories relates to Kōsaku Hamada, a Japanese archaeologist from the Kyoto Imperial University who visited Britain in the early 20th century and was taught by Petrie. Hamada treasured this time so much that he gifted a Korean bronze mirror, engraved with a motif of a Chinese phoenix to Petrie, still in the collection today. This workshop sets out to continue the tradition of sharing and gifting, recognising the importance of cross-cultural relationships.
