Disraeli (1929 dir. Alfred E. Green)

disraeli

With pre-show talk and post-show Q&A.

One of the first British “talkies”, winner of an Academy Award, this film is screened for the first time in years.

Disraeli (dir. Alfred E. Green, 1929) is a fictionalised account of the British Prime Minister’s efforts to secure the Suez Canal, for the Empire, in the face of international intrigue and antisemitism. Praised for its similarity to the historical Disraeli, George Arliss’ performance in the title role made him the first ever British winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor.

A huge success in its own time, the film has since been neglected. This is a rare opportunity to catch this piece of British cinematic history.

The screening will be preceded by UCL’s Professor Michael Berkowitz’s reflections on the history of the film, its place in Jewish history, and making the case for it returning to the canon. It will be followed by a question anf answer session, and is part of the Festival of Early Jewish Cinema.

Age rating: Universal

Film running time: 90 minutes

Ticket prices explained:
The organiser of these events understands that in this current financial climate, attending events may not be within people's budgets. As a result they are committed to keeping the full price ticket at an affordable £10.
They also understand that others may be in the fortunate position to be able to pay more. As a result, there is the option to buy a full price ticket at a greater value ranging from £15-25. These higher priced tickets help subsidise the lower price tickets/concessions.
If you qualify for a student/disabled/aged under 18/senior citizen/unemployed/EQUITY ticket then there is a £5 concession ticket available.
If you buy a ticket for /both events/ at the full price of £10, the total will be discounted from £20 to £15 when you reach the check out page.
