A version of the London Underground map on a lilac background with names of famous women and non-binary people in place of tube stations

Thursday 15 & Saturday 17 June 2023, 11:00
Duration: 2.5 hours

Inspired by the City of Women project, this wandering tour will join up hidden gems in and around Camden and bring them to life through storytelling.

Camden Wanderings will be a celebration of the lives and achievements of the extraordinary women and non-binary people (past and present) that have a connection to the borough and wider city.

Tour outline

The tour will start at the UCL Petrie Museum of Egyptian & Sudanese Archaeology in Bloomsbury to focus on ancient Egyptian and Nubian objects used by women.

From UCL, we’ll move on to take in the sights and sounds of Somers Town, wandering through the British Library and exploring Global Generation’s colourful Story Garden.

We will then continue to King’s Cross, stopping off at wondrous spaces along the way including wild Camley Street Natural Park and the historic St Pancras Old Church.

As we wander, we will reflect on the way Camden has shaped, inspired and informed women - from brilliant writers Andrea Levy and Virginia Woolf to bold activists Olivia Morris and Octavia Hill. We will also spotlight the work of amazing local organisations, from Women at the Well, a charity in King’s Cross dedicated to providing a creative and supportive space for vulnerable women, to Crossroads Women’s Centre - a disability-accessible, multi-racial community resource.

At the end of the walk, there will be opportunity for a picnic lunch. You can bring a packed lunch or alternatively you can buy lunch from the nearby Canopy Market.

This walk will be led by Saira Niazi; writer, guide and founder of Living London.

City of Women London

What would your daily commute look like if it celebrated remarkable women and non-binary people who have shaped our city? City of Women encourages Londoners to take a second glance at places we might once have taken for granted by reimagining the iconic Underground map.

Living London

Living London wanderings offer you the opportunity to explore parts of London that remain relatively unknown and under-explored. The wanderings bring London’s magical hidden gems to life through storytelling and anecdotes of people and place. Each walk lasts about 2.5 hours including stop-offs at various locations.
