Case Study: Research Images As Art
Research Images As Art Competition
How UCL Educational Media helped research scientists to become artists
Educational Media has collaborated with the UCL Doctoral School for nearly 20 years on the Research Images as Art Competition. We reproduce the submitted images as high quality exhibition prints for the annual exhibition in the cloisters. The competition, open to all current graduate students and academic staff across UCL, is for images associated with their research which have aesthetic appeal.
The exhibition is a showcase of the images illustrating the diversity of research throughout UCL. Over the years the popularity of this competition has grown to nearly 400 entries and now only the best 100 images chosen by a six judge panel are formatted and printed. Eight prizes are awarded, first prize, six runners-up and a ‘People’s Choice’ prize.
The images are then added to the UCL Imagestore and are available for the promotion of UCL. They are used extensively by our graphic designers in their projects.
