Artist filmmaker Lynn Loo will be presenting two projection performances, 'Autumn Fog' and 'Washi #2':

Autumn Fog (2010)
16mm film is used to capture the light and colours of autumn in my garden. The camera takes a secondary role by being stationary while it captures movement of light through the nature in the garden. Similar processes to those used in End Rolls are applied to fog the film. To explore further the colours in film, the positive film and the negative film are projected together on top of one another.

Washi #2 (2014)
This work is inspired from Mary Martin’s “Drawings for Expanding Permutation, 1969”. The film uses various patterns and colours of Washi tape adhered onto 16mm clear film. Multiple black and white film prints are made and presented on two film projectors. The sound is also produced from the printed through lines of the patterns onto the soundtrack side of the film.

Following the performances, there will be time for questions and discussion.

The performances will start promptly at 5pm, so please arrive no later than 4.45pm. We may not be able to admit late arrivals once the event has started.

This free event is supported by the UCL School for the Creative and Cultural Industries (SCCI) and is organised in conjunction with the MSc for the Conservation of Contemporary Art and Media (UCL East) in support of the programme’s teaching and research on the conservation of performance art.

About the artist

Lynn Loo is an artist filmmaker originally from Singapore and based in London since 2004. Her works consist of single-screen films and multiple film projection performances that use 16mm cine film and occasionally video. They can be described in various ways such as poetic, musical, materialist, diaristic, structural, and experimental.

For this event, Lynn Loo will be presenting two projection performances, 'Autumn Fog' and 'Washi #2'. Both use two 16mm film projectors but are made in different ways. Autumn Fog was filmed with a 16mm camera and is silent. Washi #2 is entirely hand-made with its images and sounds coming directly from Washi tape stuck directly onto blank 16mm film. The soundtrack is therefore also optical.

Lynn Loo’s works have been shown at a range of venues including, film, visual arts and sound festivals, galleries and museums around the world. She has also run film workshops and curated programmes for festivals. More details can be found on her website.

Lynn Loo also works as a Conservation Specialist at BFI National Film and Television Archive and as an occasional visiting lecturer running 16mm film workshops at Middlesex University.
