The UCL Centre for Blockchain Technology (UCL BCT) has secured its place in the top 10 for the second consecutive year in the 2022 CoinDesk University Rankings, confirming its position as one of the biggest centres for blockchain education and research in the world.

UCL is ahead of other leading UK universities for blockchain, including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London, which according to CoinDesk’s latest rankings, shows that UCL is “punching above its weight.”

CoinDesk is the most authoritative news site in blockchain, Bitcoin, digital assets and digital currencies with 5.7M unique visitors per month.

Rankings are based on a range of metrics, which include the number and influence of its research publications, the number of courses, degrees, conferences, clubs and industry partnerships or grants, where graduates get jobs, its reputation, as well as other measures.

UCL’s outstanding rating is a result of an extensive range of crypto-related programmes and activities, including two blockchain research centres, two student clubs and four master’s programmes. The report highlights that “no other school in our sample of 240 universities had as many blockchain graduate degrees.”

CoinDesk’s assessment also acknowledges UCL’s impressive research outputs, which notes that 186 blockchain academic papers were published between 2019-22 with 1,984 high-level citations in the academic press.

Commenting on the results, UCL CBT Executive Director Dr Paolo Tasca said: "It gives us great pleasure to learn about UCL's continued leadership in this prestigious ranking. At the UCL Centre for Blockchain Technologies, we strive to lead in the field.

It thus gives us great pleasure to receive this distinction which puts UCL ahead of its UK peers. This underscores our motivation to continue expanding the frontiers of blockchain and distributed ledger technology with rigour and passion."
