Could technological advances impact our chances of ensuring a sustainable future? Where are current emerging technologies taking us? And can we govern them to support our sustainability efforts?

These are some of the questions that we will explore in this talk at the intersection of AI technologies and sustainability. Dr Pérez-Ortiz will present the main ideas behind planet-centered AI, which aims to put our social and environmental ecosystems at the epicentre of technological development. This is the underlying principle of the new MSc at UCL Computer Science on AI for Sustainable Development, where we educate engineers on AI, but at the same time also environmental risks, social welfare issues, ethics, and much more.

Planet-centered AI puts the focus on more responsible innovation, as well on aligning tech development with our most pressing global real-world challenges (climate change, biodiversity loss, inequality and many others). It also means making AI sustainable, by enabling it to be more participatory and green.

There will be opportunities to ask questions after the presentation.
