Friday 26 February, 5pm. Dr Georgina Barker, 'Translating Sappho Straight into Russian'

17 February 2021

To mark LGBTQIA+ History Month, the Department of Greek and Latin has organized the following event.

Alexandre Isailoff - Sappho

Friday 26 February, 5pm. Dr Georgina Barker, 'Translating Sappho Straight into Russian', chaired by Phoebe Brereton (MA Classical Reception student)

Sappho was a lesbian: a right-on woman, who wrote poetry about her love of women. Everyone knows that, right?” – Maybe. Sappho’s sexuality depends on which Sappho you read: which edition, which history, which translation. In twentieth-century Russia there were just two complete translations of Sappho, in editions which insistently straightened her out for a Soviet readership. This talk sets out the seven steps to Translating Sappho Straight into Russian.
