Our programme at UCL offers a uniquely wide range of ancient languages and cultures
- Study of Classics and the Ancient World at UCL is about the full spectrum of ancient languages and civilisations, and we encourage students to concentrate on whichever aspects of the ancient world interest them most.
- Our BA degree pathways offer both flexibility and creativity in the study of the past and its afterlife.
We offer Greek and Latin language and literature; ancient history, art, and archaeology; philosophy, politics and religion; linguistics, papyrology and palaeography. We also offer study of the ancient Middle East from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia.
Our BA programme Classics and the Ancient World has three tracks:

(1) Classics (Language and Literature)
A BA in Classics which focuses on the language, literature and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. Students take Greek and Latin language in all three years, read a wide range of ancient literature in the original language, and are encouraged to take courses in ancient philosophy, history and archaeology. Applicants to this BA track need an A-level or equivalent in either Greek or Latin.
(2) Ancient Literature, History, Archaeology
A BA programme which offers a wide range of courses in the literature, history, art and archaeology of the ancient world. It offers the opportunity to start an ancient language, as well as courses in ancient literature and culture which are taught in translation. We welcome applicants with no prior experience of an ancient language.
(3) Ancient Middle Eastern Studies
A BA which focuses on the language, literature, history and archaeology the ancient Middle East (Anatolia, Syria, and Mesopotamia), and the rich network of connections with neighboring regions. All students take one or more cuneiform languages (Akkadian, Hittite, Sumerian). We welcome applicants with no prior experience of an ancient language.
