William Ramsay Memorial PGT Bursary

The William Ramsay Memorial PGT Bursary is awarded to a deserving post-graduate taught student.

The award is based on financial need and academic merit and is intended to help those from groups historically under-represented in science and engineering careers and within the Department.

Value: £2,100 which can be used to cover educational and/or housing costs   

Available to:  Eligible students enrolled on a post-graduate taught programme in Chemical Engineering at UCL 

Selection criteria:  Financial need and academic merit 

Eligible fee status: UK only 

Duration: 1 year

How to apply and selection  

Using the application form link below, please apply by uploading:  

  1. A statement of interest of maximum of 500 words:  
    a) Telling us about yourself,  
    b) Why you applied to study in UCL Chemical Engineering,  
    c) How you plan to use the bursary if you were successful,  
    d) Why you deserve the bursary  
  2. Answering the questions, as per the ‘Financial Position Questions’ (see Appendix 1 below), in relation to your financial position. *  

For the Academic merit the original programme application form will also be used as part of the review and selection process.  

*The successful awardee will be asked to provide further evidence of their financial position in conjunction with their answers.

Appendix 1  

Q5. [Mandatory] Please provide a figure for your household's gross annual income (you must convert this into UK £ sterling - numerical values only).  

Please indicate the gross annual income of your household for the year prior to the beginning of your course. This should include all earning members of the household whose wages go towards the general maintenance of the household, such as rent and bills. Part-time work for spending money that is not contributed to general household support should not be included. Please be aware that if you are shortlisted for a scholarship, we will require evidence of this amount in the form of bank statements, tax returns and P60s.  

Q6. [Mandatory] Please specify the number of people in the household who live on the combined income stated above (include earners and/or yourself).  

This should include all members of the household who are dependent on the amount indicated in question 22. This should include the money earners themselves, and anyone else who lives in the house and is dependent on those earnings in some way. This should also include yourself.  

Q7. [Mandatory] Are you currently in receipt of state benefits?  

Please indicate if you are currently in receipt of any state benefits (Housing Benefit, Jobseeker's Allowance, Child Tax Credit etc.) including any that would stop as the result of your studies. Please note that you will be asked to provide evidence of this if your application is successful.

Please select the employment category that best fits the main income earner in the household. Some examples are given in the dropdown to provide guidance as to what each category includes. Please try and pick the category you feel most closely resembles the main earner’s occupational level. We will check this with additional information provided. 

Q10. [Mandatory] Please give the occupation (or former occupation if retired) of the household's highest earner. 

Please give the occupation (i.e. Secondary School Teacher) of the highest earner indicated in question 9. 

Q11. [Mandatory] Please specify the number of people in the household who live on the combined income stated above (include earners and/or yourself). 

This should include all members of the household who are dependent on the amount indicated in question 8. This should include the money earners themselves, and anyone else who lives in the house and is dependent on those earnings in some way. This should also include yourself. 

Q12. [Mandatory] Are you the first member of your family to attend university? 

This should include your immediate family, including parent(s), spouse and sibling(s). 

Q13. [Mandatory] Are you registered as living with a disability? 

This should be marked ‘Yes’ if you are recognized as disabled. Please note that we will need to verify this information and would expect you to register with UCL’s Disability Services department. 

Q14. [Mandatory] Are you a single parent? Are you from a single parent family? 

Please indicate whether you are yourself a single parent or were raised in a single-parent family. 

Q15. [Mandatory] Have you ever lived in care? 

Please indicate if you have ever lived in care, even if you are no longer living in care. 

Q16. [Mandatory] Have you ever been homeless? 

Please indicate if you have ever been homeless, even if you are no longer homeless. 

Q17. [Mandatory] Are you currently in receipt of state benefits?
