The holdings are mainly from the different departments of Lensovet: it is the essential archive if you are working on everyday life or city planning etc. Note, though, that some of the materials are now in other archives: e.g. TsGALI-SPb. has the Upravlenie kul'tury, TsGAKFFD the photographs and so on.

There is a useful printed putevoditel' as well as online information. The opisi of many of the fondy (especially the Prezidium Lensoveta etc.) are skeletal; knowledge of a more specific fond may help. Much of the material is still uncatalogued and therefore unavailable, though the declassification here has been universal, or nearly so.

This archive used to be particularly inconvenient to use for several reasons including its distant location (in an industrial area close to Farforovskaya elektrichka station) and limited opening times. Much material was available on microfilm only. Some was issued in the filial of the archive in the centre, on Shpalernaya (same building as TsGALI); this is located more conveniently, but computers could not be used here at all - on Varfolomeevskaya they could be used on battery only. It is hoped that the new location at ulitsa Dybenko, even further out, but nearer a metro, will, one hopes, bring easier and more pleasant working conditions for readers, not to speak of staff.
