Dr Maria Efthymiou shares her thoughts on the Athena Swan Committee

What is your role in the Athena SWAN Committee? 

I am a member of the Organisation and Workload Group in the Athena Swan Committee.

Why did you decide to join the Athena SWAN Committee?

I joined the committee because I wanted to get actively involved with promoting gender equality across higher education and research and support women's advancement in science. I feel the Athena SWAN Charter and Committee is actively changing the workplace and promoting this change; and I am proud that I can be part of it. 

What does the Athena SWAN Committee do?

The Committee is responsible for increasing awareness of the Athena SWAN charter, encouraging adherence to its principles and ensuring that changes are implemented. 

Why is the Athena SWAN Committee important? 

The role of the Athena Swan Committee is critical for continued improvement so that the institute can retain and increase the level of the Athena SWAN award.

Has the Athena SWAN Committee helped you learn more about the Cancer Institute?

The Athena SWAN Committee has helped me learn a lot more about the Cancer Institute and all the opportunities available to proote my career, promote gender equality, and help others.
